Great business consulting is the ability to assess critical performance based on a meaningful, experienced, thoroughly documented understanding of the issue.

“How can you tell the difference between great business advice and bad business advice.”

The answer is simple, avoid consultants who offer to diagnose the problem, before assessing the situation (they're dangerous!).

Great business consulting is about being able to look dynamically at a problem and opportunity (not in a non-static way). It's to analyze in an integrative way; to understand how the problem or the opportunity, the challenge or the issue, interrelates with other factors and to be able to (from prior experience), counsel/advise and direct the business owner to take better actions and make better decisions, which will produce a greater outcome for the time and effort.

The first step in solving any problem, is to realise there is one!

When I consult with you as a client, I take a painstaking amount of time to better understand your business. I achieve this by working through the strategic planning questionnaire, which when completed, provides enough business strategy information to allow informed decision making.

 

The next thing I want to know is what you want from your business. Because if you don’t want for it what I want for it, then that's likely to be a problem, because I can’t want it more than you do!

 

A great business consultant is a masterful thinking partner, because they help you think differently, they're a true mentor as opposed to a coach and whilst I believe coaches are very noble in what they do, most coaches haven't been where you want to go. And so they tend to work backwards.

 

A mentor is somebody who’s been there, done that, knows what’s possible, what’s dangerous and will not allow you to under-aspire or over-aspire without progression. A great business consultant helps you first of all clarify what you’re trying to accomplish and perhaps more importantly - Why!

 

He or she helps you reconcile whether accomplishing what you set out to achieve, (in your current competitive environment, with your strategy and business model, your marketing approach, the performance, and dynamics metrics you’re yielding) - is going to get you there, or not.

He or she then needs to look at what you believe the problem is, because the first step in solving any problem, is to realise there is one.
